Our Mission - Get Off The Couch

Disaster Response Missions

This is what SDIA was founded on, and continues to be our primary continued service opportunity. When a natural disaster strikes, teams of skilled Sheep Dogs and other volunteers are deployed to provide immediate “impact assistance” to devastated communities.

Teams provide help through tree and debris removal, muck-out operations, covering roofs & windows, distributing food & water, and other meaningful tasks.

Outdoor Adventures

Disasters are not on a schedule, so we looked for other ways to keep our Sheep Dogs engaged each month – opportunities that would provide them with new challenges and foster camaraderie.

The Outdoor Adventures program accomplishes this, and includes hunting & fishing trips, obstacle course races, skydiving and scuba diving. For our sponsored Sheep Dogs (those injured in combat or the line of duty), these adventures present them with challenges that test their rehabilitation progress, restore independence and self-confidence, and reengage them in living life to the fullest. These opportunities for camaraderie and peer support are vital to inspiring a positive state of mind and perspective.

Was back in the gym teaching classes yesterday and today at the gym!

To ALL our Firefighter brothers and sisters in Arkansas (and around the world), thank you for literally running into the danger most run away from. We honor and recognize your extraordinary bravery, courage, dedication and sacrifices to help those of us in desperate need.

In 2016, Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson declared January 27 "Arkansas Firefighter Recognition Day", and #SDIA stands beside and behind our fellow Arkansans in recognizing these #Heroes.

Sheep Dog in the News - This recent West Point graduate is Alex Idrache. He grew up in a slum in Haiti, and he tells the story of how U.S. soldiers were deployed to his neighborhood following the earthquake there several years ago. He says their presence was the first experience of "hope" he recalls in his childhood.

He remembers looking at his dad and asking him who the people were that were helping. His dad looked at him and said, "They are American soldiers." He looked back at his father and said, "One day, I will be an American soldier."

His father knew the situation in Haiti was unworkable and tried for several years to obtain a visa to come to the United States. After being denied for several years, he was finally granted a spot in Baltimore. He purchased a ticket on a boat for his family and left Haiti. They arrived and Alex, remembering his dream in the slum several years prior, looked for a way to join the U.S. Army. He found a national guard program that allowed him to join the Army in exchange for citizenship. He didn't hesitate.

After a series of fortunate occurrences, he was given one of the few spots at West Point for prior enlisted soldiers. Despite his severe lack of formal education, he graduated as an honor graduate (top 5% physically and academically) and the top student in the Physics Department. This picture was taken just prior to tossing his hat in the air, the realization of a dream that began 10 years ago in a slum in Port-au-Prince.

"You were worth it. And I would do it all again. For you."

Read that again. Let those words sink in.

They were spoken by a true American hero, the only survivor of 2005's Operation Redwing. Marcus Luttrell fought for hours on end alongside his SEAL Team 10 teammates...and watched the enemy kill each one. He evaded capture for six days after the battle before he was rescued. He suffered horrible injuries, seen and unseen. And still, he said those words just a few months ago. And he meant them.
