Where did the name “Sheep Dog Impact Assistance” come from?

The inspiration for the name initially came from Lt. Col. (U.S. Army Ret.) Dave Grossman’s book On Combat, where he frequently used the term “sheepdog” to refer to all those in our society who serve as the protectors — police, firefighters, EMTs, and military men and women. Grossman wrote that sheepdogs are by nature protectors, and that many people don’t even realize they are born sheepdogs until an emergency situation arises and brings out their exceptional character traits. (You can read more regarding Grossman’s sheepdog analogy at On Sheep, Wolves, and Sheepdogs. We added “impact assistance” to the name, because that is what we provide to communities hit by natural disasters and our Sheep Dogs in need.

Do I have to be a “Sheep Dog” to become a volunteer?
