SgtMaj’s Takeaway Part 2: Choices, Character, and Moral Strength

SgtMaj Lance Nutt shares a powerful lesson on choices, character, and moral strength through the story of George Washington and Benedict Arnold—and what it means for living the Get Off The Couch® mission.

Character Is Revealed in the Storm

There’s a common belief that crisis builds character.

But as SgtMaj reminds us:

“Character is not made in a crisis; it is only exhibited.”

When pressure hits, when life gets heavy, when the moment demands something from us—we don’t suddenly become someone new.

We reveal who we already are.

Two Leaders. Two Paths. Two Outcomes.

In the early days of the Revolutionary War, George Washington and Benedict Arnold stood shoulder to shoulder as heroes of the Colonies.

Both were respected.
Both were battle-tested.
Both sacrificed greatly for the cause.

Arnold was bold, fearless, and in many ways one of the most capable battlefield commanders of his time. He led from the front, charging into danger, even having multiple horses shot out from under him in combat.

But history didn’t remember him for his courage.

It remembered him for his choice.

After being wounded at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777, Arnold carried not only physical pain—but growing resentment. Burdened by debt, influenced by poor personal decisions, and driven by greed, he made a decision that would define his legacy.

In 1780, Benedict Arnold committed treason.

At the very same time, Washington faced his own pressures, hardships, and uncertainty. Yet he remained anchored in something deeper—character, integrity, and purpose beyond self.

That difference changed everything.

The Real Battle: Internal, Not External

The contrast between these two men wasn’t talent.

It wasn’t opportunity.

It wasn’t even hardship.

It was choice.

  • Arnold chose resentment over responsibility
  • Arnold chose self over service
  • Arnold chose short-term gain over long-term legacy

Meanwhile:

  • Washington chose sacrifice over comfort
  • Washington chose integrity over convenience
  • Washington chose purpose over personal gain

Two men. Two choices. Two destinies.

What This Means for Us Today

At Sheep Dog Impact Assistance, this lesson isn’t just history—it’s lived every day.

Our Veterans and First Responders don’t just face external challenges.
They face internal ones too.

And the truth is:

👉 Struggle doesn’t define you—your choices within it do.
👉 Pain doesn’t determine your future—your response to it does.

This is the heart of Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) and the Get Off The Couch® (GOTC) Continuum of Care.

Through Outdoor Adventures, Warrior PATHH, and Continued Service, we help Sheep Dogs:

  • Reconnect with purpose
  • Strengthen their moral compass
  • Choose growth over stagnation
  • Turn adversity into forward momentum

Because every step forward is a choice.

When the Test Comes

SgtMaj said it best:

“Great challenges can test the character of even the bravest of men. Some men pass, others don’t.”

The question isn’t if you’ll face the test.

The question is:

Who will you be when it comes?

Will you choose resentment… or resilience?
Will you choose self… or service?
Will you choose to stay stuck… or to get off the couch?

Your Next Step

Character is built in the quiet moments—long before the spotlight ever finds you.

And every single day offers a choice.

Choose growth.
Choose purpose.
Choose to move forward.
