Where did the name “Sheep Dog Impact Assistance” come from?
The inspiration for the name initially came from Lt. Col. (U.S. Army Ret.) Dave Grossman’s book On Combat, where he frequently used the term “sheepdog” to refer to all those in our society who serve as the protectors — police, firefighters, EMTs, and military men and women. Grossman wrote that sheepdogs are by nature protectors, and that many people don’t even realize they are born sheepdogs until an emergency situation arises and brings out their exceptional character traits. (You can read more regarding Grossman’s sheepdog analogy at On Sheep, Wolves, and Sheepdogs.) We added “impact assistance” to the name because we provide impactful assistance to those affected by natural disasters and our fellow Sheep Dogs in need.
Do I have to be a “Sheep Dog” to become a volunteer?
Not at all. Sheep Dog IA was founded by military personnel to include all those who serve their country and communities: military, law enforcement, fire & rescue, and emergency medical professionals. Those who do not have a Sheep Dog background but do have a Sheep Dog heart and mindset – the desire to serve and help those in need – are also welcome and encouraged to be part of making a difference in the lives of our nation’s heroes.
Are donations to Sheep Dog tax-deductible?
Absolutely. Sheep Dog Impact Assistance is an approved 501c3 non-profit organization.
