Sheep Dog Impact Assistance (SDIA), in partnership with Second Mountain Adventures and Veterans Center District 3, recently hosted its final Couples Outdoor Adventure of 2025 in the stunning Black Hills of South Dakota.
For this group of Veterans, First Responders, and their spouses, the weeklong Rushmore Couples Outdoor Adventure was more than a trip; it was a powerful reminder of courage, connection, and healing. From breathtaking landscapes to once-in-a-lifetime experiences, participants left renewed, inspired, and ready to continue their journey of Post-Traumatic Growth.

A Journey Through History and Healing
The adventure began with a scenic train ride on the Black Hills Central Railroad, winding through Keystone and Hill City, before a stop at the Big Thunder Gold Mine. That evening, couples gathered under the stars to take in the nighttime illumination of Mount Rushmore, a moment of reflection and awe that set the tone for the week.
“Last night I sat in the shadow of giants and reflected on the greatness that made America great. I sat amongst brave Sheep Dogs and their spouses as part of a Sheep Dog Impact Assistance Outdoor Adventure.” – Nate Nathanson
Over the following days, participants soared on zip-lines, flew above the rugged terrain on scenic helicopter rides through Bear Country USA, and stood atop the awe-inspiring Crazy Horse Memorial Monument with a private guided tour. These unforgettable moments were paired with SDIA’s signature Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) training, helping Sheep Dogs learn new ways to thrive after service.

Building Stronger Bonds
Outdoor Adventures like Rushmore are designed not only to challenge participants physically but to strengthen their relationships and emotional resilience. By bringing spouses along, couples learned together how to navigate stress, re-ignite connection, and build healthier pathways for growth.
“There are no words to express our gratitude for such an amazing experience! It was life-changing!” – Rushmore OA Participant

The Power of Getting Off the Couch™
Since 2010, SDIA has helped more than 23,000 Sheep Dogs (military, veterans, and first responders) “Get Off the Couch” and rediscover purpose. Outdoor Adventures, like this Couples OA at Mount Rushmore, are the first step in SDIA’s life-changing continuum of care, leading participants to Warrior PATHH and Continued Service opportunities.
As one participant put it:
“Our Sheep Dogs have closed out their Outdoor Adventure to Mt. Rushmore with some epic adventures! While making these incredible memories with fellow warriors and spouses, our Sheep Dogs have learned the foundation of Post Traumatic Growth, and are leaving inspired to continue to ‘Get Off the Couch’ and live the life they deserve no matter where they return home to.” – Dan Smith
