A Legacy of Service Rolls Into Heroes Ranch: 1951 Military Jeep Honors Mark Naughton
On August 1, a remarkable piece of military history arrived at Sheep Dog Impact Assistance’ Heroes Ranch carrying something even more meaningful than its history: the legacy of a Sheep Dog.
A Korean War-era 1951 M38 Jeep, lovingly restored by Marine Sergeant and Army Master Sergeant Mark Naughton, was donated to Sheep Dog Impact Assistance (SDIA) by Mark’s three children, Killian Cline, Gunnar Naughton, and Tannan Millsap.
The Jeep now has a new home at Heroes Ranch, where it will serve as a lasting tribute to Mark’s military service, craftsmanship, patriotism, and the life he built beyond the uniform.
Honoring a Lifetime of Military Service
Mark Naughton dedicated a significant part of his life to serving his country.
A Marine Sergeant and Army Master Sergeant, Mark received the Bronze Star with Valor for his heroic actions in Grenada in 1983.
His service, however, was only one part of the legacy remembered by those who knew and loved him.
After retiring, Mark continued putting his hands, skill, and attention to work. Restoring the 1951 M38 Jeep became one of his special projects. What began as a piece of military history became something distinctly his: a reflection of his craftsmanship and his enduring connection to service.
Following Mark’s passing in 2023, his family wanted that piece of his story to continue.
They chose Heroes Ranch.
A Special Arrival at Heroes Ranch
The Jeep’s arrival was fittingly a family and community affair.
Mark’s son-in-law, Mitch Millsap, drove the restored Jeep to Tuskegee Hall with Mark’s brother, daughter, and grandson riding alongside him.
They were joined by members of two organizations that had also been important to Mark: the Military Veterans Motorcycle Club and the Konza Prairie Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Their presence transformed the Jeep’s arrival into something much larger than the delivery of a historic vehicle.
It was a gathering of generations, organizations, family members, and fellow patriots connected by one man’s life of service.
A special thank-you also goes to Floyd Dowell, Gunnar’s father-in-law, who helped get the Jeep running again and transported it to Heroes Ranch.
Because of the work and care of Mark’s family and friends, the Jeep arrived not merely as an artifact to be displayed, but as a piece of history still capable of telling its story.
More Than a Military Jeep
At Heroes Ranch, Mark’s restored Jeep represents something SDIA understands deeply: service does not simply disappear when the uniform comes off.
The experiences, relationships, values, sacrifices, and sense of purpose built through service become part of a person’s story.
That is also why preserving the stories of our nation’s Military Members, Veterans, and First Responders matters.
Visitors may first notice a beautifully restored 1951 M38 Jeep.
But behind the steel, tires, and military history is a man.
A Marine.
A Soldier.
A husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and fellow Sheep Dog.
A craftsman who took something old and gave it new life.
And now, through the generosity of his family, that work will help keep his own story alive.
Heroes Remembered at Heroes Ranch
Sheep Dog Impact Assistance is deeply grateful to Mark’s children, Killian Cline, Gunnar Naughton, and Tannan Millsap, and to the entire Naughton family for entrusting SDIA with such a meaningful piece of their father’s legacy.
Heroes Ranch is more than a physical location. It is a place built around service, connection, purpose, and the people who embody those values.
Mark Naughton is now among the heroes recognized there.
His restored Jeep will give future visitors an opportunity to stop, look a little closer, and learn about the person behind it.
It will remind us that history isn’t only found in museums or written in books.
Sometimes, it rolls through the gates on four wheels.
And sometimes, the best way to honor a legacy of service is to make sure the next generation has the opportunity to hear the story.
