The 2026 Sheep Dog Impact Assistance (SDIA) Heroes Gala will be dedicated in honor of Master Chief Steven “Steve” Flemming, a man who embodied the values at the heart of SDIA—service, resilience, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to others.
Steve’s life was a living example of what it means to be a Sheep Dog: to stand watch, to lead from the front, and to continue serving others no matter the circumstances.
A Life of Service and Leadership
Master Chief Flemming served nearly 19 years in the United States Navy, rising to one of the highest enlisted ranks. Throughout his distinguished career, he earned numerous honors, including:
• Two Meritorious Service Medals
• Multiple Navy and Marine Corps Commendation and Achievement Medals with Valor
• The Combat Action Ribbon
Steve’s leadership extended far beyond his military service. He was a trusted mentor, a respected leader, and a fierce advocate for the veteran community.
A Devoted Husband, Father, and Brother in Service
Beyond the uniform, Steve was a devoted husband to his wife Lauren and a proud father to their daughters, Avery and Harper. He balanced the demands of military service with a deep commitment to his family, embodying strength, humility, and love in every role he carried.
Those who knew Steve remember his sharp humor, steady leadership, and genuine compassion—qualities that made him not only a great leader, but a great friend.
Strength in the Face of Adversity
After being diagnosed with cancer caused by burn pit exposure during his deployment in Afghanistan, Steve chose to continue living with courage and purpose.
Rather than step back, he leaned in.
He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, competed in the Warrior Games, and represented the enduring strength of the veteran community at the Invictus Games.
Even in the face of adversity, Steve demonstrated what it means to Struggle Well—to rise, to adapt, and to continue moving forward with purpose.
A Legacy That Lives On
Master Chief Steve Flemming passed on October 20, 2025, but his legacy continues to ripple through the lives he touched.
He leaves behind a powerful example of:
• Service before self
• Leadership through action
• Resilience in the face of adversity
• A lifelong commitment to others
At Sheep Dog Impact Assistance, we are proud to honor his life and legacy at the 2026 Heroes Gala.
