Female Veterans Conquer Challenges in the Black Hills of SD

Recently, Sheep Dog Impact Assistance (SDIA) took a group of 20 female Veterans on an unforgettable Outdoor Adventure (OA) to the Black Hills of South Dakota, Mount Rushmore and the surrounding area.

Packed with activities and challenging experiences, all our Sheep Dogs were excited about the events, and looked forward to connecting with fellow Sheep Dogs to find the camaraderie that many were missing.

“Visiting Mount Rushmore opened my eyes to the power of human creativity and the stories carved into history, inspiring me to seek out new experiences beyond my comfort zone. That spirit of adventure has transformed my life, making me braver, more curious, and eager to explore the world’s wonders. Every journey with SDIA feels like a chance to discover new places, meet other great Sheep Dogs, and heal my mind and heart."

The group went on the Big Thunder Gold Mine tour and panned for gold, and visited Mount Rushmore where they watched the Evening Lighting Ceremony were honored on stage after lighting the monument.

They went on a private tour to top of the Crazy Horse monument and took a scenic steam train ride on the renowned 1880 Train through the rolling hills, beautiful vistas and spectacular landscapes of the Black Hills.

These adventurous women threw caution to the wind and jumped on ATVs to ride through Custer State Park, and they conquered a rope and zip lining course which challenged them to get out of their comfort zone and push themselves to do things they never imagined!

“I absolutely needed the Mt. Rushmore Outdoor Adventure with Sheep Dogs more than I knew. I met great people that shared their heartfelt stories with us. It gave me a new outlook on life in general. I use the 4-7-8 breathing exercise almost daily. The camaraderie and genuine care for others was so present. Healing through helping others is such a great thing. I’m still healing through a lot in my life and this total experience and the great people I met makes life much more bearable. We still keep in touch and that’s the most awesome part.”
