Training New Guides and Living the Mission
The banks of the Elk River and the rugged trails around Heroes Ranch came alive this past week as Sheep Dog Impact Assistance (SDIA) hosted its latest Outdoor Adventure (OA), the Rock Crawlers & Elk River Float. More than just a weekend of fun, this event was about training, teamwork, and transformation.

Congratulations to Our Newest Outdoor Adventure Guides
SDIA is proud to congratulate its newest group of Outdoor Adventure Guides! These Sheep Dogs spent an incredible week at Heroes Ranch, immersed in training that covered everything it takes to be an expert guide.
The week included:
- CPR certifications and essential first aid skills.
- Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) training to help participants turn trauma into strength.
- Hands-on experience with the same activities they’ll lead in future OAs.
After an intensive week of preparation, the trainees put their skills to the test by leading the Rock Crawlers & Elk River Float Outdoor Adventure. With grit, leadership, and heart, these guides-in-training are now ready to lead life-changing experiences for veterans and first responders.
These future OA Guides are ready to lead life-changing adventures for our Veterans and First Responders. The future of SDIA is looking bright!

A Blast on the Elk River
The final day of the training ended on a high note: floating down the Elk River together. The group bonded over teamwork, resilience, and laughter, closing out the week with the kind of camaraderie that makes every SDIA event unforgettable.
“Last day of our Sheep Dog Impact Assistance Outdoor Adventure. We had a blast going down the Elk River! What a great crew and awesome time!”

Rock Crawling and RZR Riding: Adventure with Purpose
One of the highlights of the weekend was the Rock Crawlers and RZR (razor) riding experience. These adrenaline-fueled activities challenged participants to navigate rugged terrain, steep climbs, and rocky paths, all while relying on trust, teamwork, and courage. For many of our nation’s heroes, tackling these trails is more than just recreation, it’s a powerful metaphor for overcoming life’s obstacles. The thrill of crawling over boulders and riding through the backcountry provided not only excitement but also the opportunity to build resilience and confidence, tools that extend well beyond the trail.

Warrior Wellness Beyond the River
Outdoor Adventures aren’t just about adrenaline; they are about healing and connection. In addition to the Rock Crawlers and Elk River Float, Sheep Dogs in Northwest Arkansas also gathered for their monthly Meet & Greet at The Quiver Archery Range, sponsored by the Peel Compton Foundation. Archery continues to be a favorite warrior wellness practice, providing focus, camaraderie, and a healthy outlet for stress.

Why Outdoor Adventures Matter
Every OA is a chance for veterans and first responders to:
- Reconnect with purpose through challenge.
- Build community with peers who understand their journey.
- Experience healing through the outdoors and shared service.
Since 2010, SDIA has helped more than 23,000 Sheep Dogs “Get Off The Couch” through Outdoor Adventures, Warrior PATHH, and Continued Service opportunities. With seven new OA Guides ready to lead, the impact will only grow.
