The Battle After the Battle: How Sheep Dog Impact Assistance Helps Veterans and First Responders Find Purpose Again

Sheep Dog Impact Assistance (SDIA) was recently featured in Stroll Pinnacle Magazine for its powerful work helping military veterans and first responders rediscover purpose, connection, and strength after service.

The article highlights the story of SDIA Founder and CEO Lance Nutt and the mission that grew from his personal experiences in the United States Marine Corps.

For many who serve, the hardest battle doesn’t end when the uniform comes off.

Sometimes, it begins afterward.

A Life Shaped by Service

Lance Nutt grew up surrounded by service and leadership. His father served as a Marine Corps naval aviator, and many of the mentors in his life—coaches, Boy Scout leaders, and teachers—were Vietnam veterans.

Patriotism in the Nutt household wasn’t political. It was personal.

So when Lance enlisted in the Marine Corps, it felt like a natural continuation of that legacy. His father even had the honor of swearing him into service, a moment Lance compares to a farmer handing the keys of the tractor to the next generation.

The responsibility was now his.

When September 11 Changed Everything

After initially leaving the military in 2000, Lance planned to move into a traditional civilian life.

Then the attacks of September 11th happened.

The call to serve again was immediate. Lance returned to the Marine Corps, deploying to Iraq in 2003–2004 and spending years in the familiar rhythm of deployments and homecomings.

Combat provided clarity. Mission, responsibility, and brotherhood were well understood.

What came next was not.

The Hidden Struggle After Service

The most difficult experiences of Lance’s career didn’t happen on the battlefield.

They happened at home.

After returning from combat, Lance began witnessing fellow Marines and sailors die by suicide. The loss was devastating and raised questions many leaders carry quietly:

Could something have been done differently?
Could someone have been saved?

For many service members and first responders, returning home brings challenges that civilians rarely see:

  • Loss of identity after leaving service
  • Relationship strain
  • Financial pressure
  • A community that struggles to understand their experiences

With fewer Americans serving today than ever before, the gap between those who serve and those who do not continues to widen.

A Turning Point: Service After the Storm

In 2005, while home on leave and wrestling with unresolved emotions, Lance watched the devastation of Hurricane Katrina unfold on television.

Frustrated and asking himself “Why am I sitting here?”, he assembled a small disaster response team and deployed to help communities in crisis.

The experience became a turning point.

Helping others helped him heal.

As Lance often says: “Helping is healing.”

That realization laid the foundation for what would become Sheep Dog Impact Assistance.

The Birth of Sheep Dog Impact Assistance

While deployed in Iraq in 2009, Lance filed the paperwork for the organization that would become Sheep Dog Impact Assistance.

The nonprofit officially launched in 2010 and initially gained national attention through disaster response missions across the United States.

But the team noticed something troubling.

Participants often felt energized while serving on missions, only to return home and struggle again with isolation and loss of purpose.

The solution became the heart of SDIA’s mission: Get Off the Couch®.

The Sheep Dog Impact Assistance Continuum of Care

Today, SDIA supports veterans and first responders through a three-pillar model designed to rebuild purpose, connection, and posttraumatic growth.

Outdoor Adventures

SDIA organizes structured outdoor experiences that reconnect participants with movement, camaraderie, and nature. These events include:

  • Hunting and fishing trips
  • Hiking and adventure races
  • Camping and outdoor excursions
  • Major expeditions like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or hiking Hadrian’s Wall

Outdoor Adventures create an environment where participants can reconnect with others who share similar experiences—often without needing to explain them.

Warrior PATHH

Warrior PATHH is a transformative program based on the science of Posttraumatic Growth (PTG).

Rather than focusing solely on trauma recovery, the program teaches that adversity can lead to stronger relationships, deeper purpose, and greater resilience.

The program is 100% fully funded, covering:

  • Travel
  • Lodging
  • Meals
  • Materials

Participants simply commit their time and willingness to do the work.

Continued Service & Disaster Response

Many veterans and first responders still feel the call to serve their communities.

SDIA offers structured disaster response missions that allow participants to continue helping others while maintaining the camaraderie and sense of mission they value.

These missions are also open to civilians who want to support the effort.

A Community Built Around Purpose

Sheep Dog Impact Assistance now serves military members, veterans, police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and other first responders from across the United States.

Programs operate from the organization’s national headquarters at Heroes Ranch, just outside Northwest Arkansas, as well as through events and programs nationwide.

The goal remains simple: Help those who protect others rediscover purpose in their own lives.

Supporting the Whole Family

Recognizing that service impacts more than just the individual, SDIA is also expanding support to families.

A new initiative called Homefront is in development to provide resources and guidance for spouses and partners navigating life alongside a service member or first responder.

Because the weight of service is often carried by the entire family.
