Get Off the Couch: Veterans & First Responders Take on Yellowstone

Sheep Dog Impact Assistance Outdoor Adventure brings Veterans and First Responders together for connection, challenge, and an unforgettable week in Montana and Yellowstone National Park.

Some places make it a little easier to remember just how big the world is.

Last week, a group of our Nation’s Veterans and First Responders traded their everyday routines for mountain trails, rushing water, horseback rides, wildlife, and the wide-open landscapes of Montana and Yellowstone National Park during Sheep Dog Impact Assistance’ Summer Yellowstone Outdoor Adventure. And they did exactly what we hoped they would do: They got off the couch.

An Outdoor Adventure in Yellowstone

The Summer Yellowstone Outdoor Adventure gave participants the opportunity to experience some of the most iconic scenery and activities the region has to offer.

Throughout the week, our Sheep Dogs explored Yellowstone National Park, went whitewater rafting, climbed and zipped through the trees in Big Sky, Montana, spent time horseback riding, visited the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, explored West Yellowstone, and, of course, encountered some of Yellowstone’s most famous residents along the way.

Yes, there were bison. 🦬

There were also good meals, plenty of laughter, conversations around the edges of each day’s adventures, new friendships, and moments you simply can’t recreate through a screen.

But those moments are exactly why Sheep Dog Impact Assistance’ Outdoor Adventures exist.

The Adventure Is the Invitation

At SDIA, we know the hardest part of an adventure sometimes happens before anyone reaches the mountain, river, trail, or horse.

It is deciding to go.

For Veterans and First Responders who have spent careers serving others, life after trauma, injury, retirement, transition, or loss can sometimes become increasingly isolated. Routines shrink. Connections change. The couch gets comfortable.

And eventually, comfortable can become stuck.

Our Outdoor Adventures provide an opportunity to interrupt that pattern.

Get Off the Couch™ isn’t simply a slogan printed on the back of a shirt. It is an invitation to take the next step.

Sometimes that step leads onto a raft.

Sometimes it leads onto a horse.

Sometimes it involves clipping into a harness while standing considerably higher above the ground than you would prefer.

And sometimes it simply means sitting beside another person who understands and having a conversation you didn’t know you needed.

Connection Through Shared Experience

Outdoor Adventures bring Veterans and First Responders together with people who understand something about service, sacrifice, transition, and the experiences that can follow a career spent running toward situations most people instinctively run away from.

That shared understanding matters.

Participants don’t have to explain every piece of their story before they can belong.

Instead, they can simply show up.

Then something interesting begins to happen.

A group of strangers gets into rafts together.

They ride horses through the mountains.

They encourage one another through a challenge course.

They laugh.

They eat together.

They explore.

They talk.

And somewhere between the helmets, paddles, horses, bison traffic jams, mountain views, and ridiculous stories that inevitably emerge from a week like this, strangers begin becoming a team.

Those relationships can continue long after everyone returns home.

More Than a Trip to Yellowstone

The Yellowstone Outdoor Adventure may have taken place against one of the most extraordinary backdrops in the country, but the destination isn’t the mission.

The people are.

Outdoor Adventures are part of Sheep Dog Impact Assistance’ broader commitment to helping Veterans and First Responders live meaningful, connected, purpose-filled lives.

By creating opportunities for camaraderie, physical activity, challenge, service, and connection, we encourage our Sheep Dogs to move forward rather than retreat from the world around them.

That is the heart of Get Off the Couch™.

It doesn’t require climbing the biggest mountain.

It means choosing movement over stagnation.

Connection over isolation.

Participation over watching life happen from the sidelines.

And sometimes, one adventure becomes the first step toward the next one.

Until the Next Adventure

To every Veteran and First Responder who joined us in Yellowstone: thank you for showing up.

Thank you for trying something new, encouraging one another, sharing your stories, laughing loudly, paddling hard, climbing higher, climbing onto the horse anyway, and making this adventure what it was.

And thank you to the staff, volunteers, supporters, donors, partners, guides, and everyone behind the scenes who helped make the Summer Yellowstone Outdoor Adventure possible.

The photographs capture some incredible moments.

But the real impact travels home with the people in them.

Another Outdoor Adventure is officially in the books.

The friendships, memories, confidence, and momentum built there?

Those are just getting started.

Until the next adventure, Sheep Dogs.

Get Off the Couch™.
