When disaster strikes, communities often look to their heroes, military members, veterans, first responders, and their families to help rebuild. In the aftermath of devastating floods across Central and Southwest Texas, Sheep Dog Impact Assistance (SDIA) has continued to engage these brave individuals, providing vital disaster response missions that foster camaraderie and promote post-traumatic growth. Recently, SDIA teamed up with the Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC) Texas Chapter, led by President Dan Legereit, to support flood cleanup efforts in Kerrville, TX.

A Collaborative Response to the Texas Flooding
The devastating flooding in Texas left many communities in need of immediate support. In response, FVC, a like-minded organization dedicated to supporting military veterans transitioning to farming and agriculture, coordinated efforts in the flood cleanup alongside local volunteers, including veteran farmers and first responders. FVC Texas Chapter President, Dan Legereit, along with other dedicated FVC members, joined the team of SDIA volunteers to help mitigate the damage caused by the floods.
This partnership highlights the importance of Continued Service opportunities that SDIA provides. By engaging those who have served our country, SDIA encourages veterans and first responders to channel their training and experiences to aid in disaster relief, all while promoting post-traumatic growth and strengthening community bonds.
Supporting Flood Victims in Texas: Resources and Assistance
To further extend their reach, FVC has partnered with Tractor Supply to provide support for farmers and ranchers who have been impacted by the floods. A comprehensive needs assessment has been set up, making it easier for individuals in need to access the assistance available. Veterans who are farmers or involved in agricultural operations can utilize this resource by filling out the survey or contacting FVC via email at support@farmvetco.org.
Additionally, for those whose farm operations have been affected, the Texas Department of Agriculture’s STAR Fund is available. This fund helps producers rebuild after natural disasters. For more information on how to apply, farmers and ranchers are encouraged to explore the resources available through the Texas Department of Agriculture and the USDA’s Disaster Assistance Tool.

Fostering Post-Traumatic Growth through Disaster Relief
One of the key missions of Sheep Dog Impact Assistance is to foster post-traumatic growth (PTG), a transformative process in which individuals who experience trauma or challenges find meaning and strength in their struggles. In the context of disaster relief, PTG is more than a therapeutic concept; it’s a call to action.
Through SDIA’s disaster response missions, veterans, first responders, and their families are not only able to assist with cleanup efforts but also to connect with others in their community, fostering new relationships and shared experiences. This camaraderie and service bring a sense of fulfillment, empowerment, and healing that can have lasting impacts, far beyond the cleanup itself.
