SDIA Disaster Response in 40/29 News Coverage

Continued Service is a vital part of the posttraumatic growth journey. Serving alongside fellow Sheep Dogs fulfills our innate drive to serve, reigniting a sense of belonging, purpose, and pride that many have been missing. Our Disaster Response Missions are the cornerstone of this service—providing impactful volunteer opportunities that empower our Sheep Dogs to continue serving their communities and country when disaster strikes. We also encourage members to engage in local acts of service that may seem small but mean everything to those affected—like repairing a disabled veteran’s home, cleaning headstones at a national cemetery, restoring a park, working in a soup kitchen, or coaching a youth team. Whether national or local, every mission is an opportunity to serve, heal, and grow.

GREENLAND, Ark. — Crews with Sheep Dog Impact Assistance are set to be back in Greenland, Arkansas, Tuesday, after multiple tornadoes hit Washington County.

Around 7:30 p.m. Monday, a possible tornado touched down west of Greenland, causing damage to homes and business.

“We like to say that helping is healing, so going out and helping others is a huge aspect of what we do,” said Bob Corscadden, director of disaster response for Sheep Dog. “A lot of times, we help people that wouldn’t normally get any help, don’t have insurance. No one’s coming to help them anytime soon. And so that’s really the kind of people we look for.”

Thousands were without power in Washington County Tuesday morning.

Sheep Dog Impact Assistance (SDIA) exists to engage, assist, and empower Sheep Dogs (military, veterans, and first responders) through Get Off The Couch programming to improve their overall physical and mental well-being. Through our programs, Sheep Dogs who have suffered similar traumas and experiences gather for camaraderie and opportunities to continue serving, which helps prevent suicides in our military personnel, veteran, and first responder communities. Our Sheep Dogs will engage with continued service opportunities such as the current Disaster Response Mission (DRM) in Northwest Arkansas. On these missions, they will get off the couch and assist our NWA community with disaster relief services such as tree removal, roof/home tarping, emergency supplies, and donation distribution. Our goal is to lead our Sheep Dogs and communities towards post-traumatic growth through our active example. SDIA harnesses the science of post-traumatic growth (PTG), that when we're forced to reflect on our lives and make sense of the destruction caused by trauma, our struggles can become a catalyst for change. We hope to not only impact our nation's Sheep Dogs but also lead our community at large towards PTG by our example. We believe in the power of our programming because we live with it every day.
